Best TV Ever!

Russell T Davies is one of the great television writers. He's the man who's given us "Queer as Folk", "The Second Coming" and most recently has been responsible for turning "Doctor Who" from camp classic into one of the most successful programmes in the UK, only beaten in the ratings by "Coronation Street" and "Emmerdale".

Russell needs to watch his back though. Since "Doctor Who" returned in 2005, the most entertaining, moving and genuinely creepy episodes of the series have been written by Steven Moffatt ("The Empty Child" and "The Doctor Dances" in series 1 and "The Girl in the Fireplace" in series 2). This year Moffatt has surpassed even his high standards with "Blink". A haunted house story for 2007, all the more remarkable for the fact that the Doctor hardly even appears.

If you didn't see it on Saturday or would normally refuse to watch "Doctor Who" because it's sci-fi or for kids, do yourself a favour and pull the curtains, turn out the lights and watch the repeat on BBC Three on Friday. It is quite possibly not only the best episode of "Doctor Who" this series but the best piece of televison drama this year!

And whatever you do, don't blink!

  1. The "Blink" episode was my initiation to the new installment of Doctor Who, and I loved it. The writing was fantastic, the film work great. It was nice and scary, and exercised the mind. (Last night, while reading Moondust, I suddenly put the book down and asked my wife, "But if she gave him that purple folder that had the pictures in it, how were the pictures ever taken?" She thought for a sec then explained, "The Doctor went up to them, showed them the pictures, and told them the had to make sure to take them." I nodded and went back to reading my book.)

  2. That episode rocked. It is hard for me to watch a tv show or film without trying to figure out camera angles, or seeing the lighting or the continuity issues. This was one of the few things so far that has caught my interest so much, I didn't even pay attention to that. And whoever played Sally Sparrow is a great actress, hope she gets more work!

  3. Crap. Swine. Beat me to it on this one. I'm totally with you. I've been captivated since day one but you're right in that some of the episodes in this series have been extraordinarily good.

In particular The Shakespeare Code, 42, the Family Of Blood two parter and the brilliant Blink stand shoulder to shoulder with not only the best of tv drama but the best feature film writing around. I am SO chuffed by this and I am very hard to please.

Speaking of writers though, why no Mark Gatiss episode this season? I know he was in The Lazarus Experiment but it's not the same :-(
