Thought Police

I was surprised last Friday to see Someone Living pop out to the beer garden for a quick think when he needed to remember something.

I don't know if I'm in favour of the thinking ban or not.

I mean sure, it's good for the publicans, people drink much more when they can't think in the pub. But it goes beyond Nanny State into Orwellian thought police territory, really, doesn't it?

Still, it's nice to met like minded people when you're outside having a think.

  1. I think there should be a thinking section in a lot of pubs - you know, for the deep and meaningful conversations, the "can I have a word" talks, the "I need to tell you something" confessions and the "can I ask your advice" moments. They'd also be handy for the "what was her name, you know, yer wan in the film" and the "actually that's a good point, never thought of it that way" occasions that just spring up.

Certainly better than having to roar into someone's ear over the noise of that bloody "That's not my name, that's not my name" song that seems preferred choice in most places, or the inane chatter of the table next to you who don't understand the sanctity of a pint in a beer garden on a sunny day.

There should be gas heaters as well. And complimentary snacks.

    Oh yes, yes indeed.

  3. The thinking ban seems to have worked in most countries in the EU. I think we were pioneers in the field.
