Our images of deities

When at a friend's house for dinner last week (and the eventual cookout and making of s'mores), the skies finally cleared and the sun came out for a little bit. The sunshine on the leaves was one of those spiritual moments. The friend, A, was born a Muslim but is now a member of the Unitarian church, and has married a Jewish man, so she has a good knowledge of religions of the world.

As the 6 of us were standing there, admiring the leaves, A said "Forget the dead guy on a stick...that's my God right there."

Perfect summing up of how most of my friends believe.

  1. That sounds like so much fun, and i agree that's God alright...he's in everything, and it's easier to see him in the beautiful. I'm not going all theological on your ass but Jesus is the manifestation of God on earth, God incarnate. I don't actually believe that myself now, i prefer to think of Jesus as just a really lovely hip guy who really loved people, (I can't believe in miracles...or the whole physical ressurection) I think he lived on in his followers hearts, and looking at the new testemant, love one another, let he who is last come first etc, it's pretty much a modern belief! But God, as in love, positive energy, a benign presence? Whatever that is, is another thing altogether....this is definately a conversation for another day!
