Something thats been bugging me lately.

Okay, so am feeling that post lunch slump now in work and feel I need a little pick me up. I head over to the coffee area to make myself a nice warm stimulating cuppa java. I reach for the brown sugar, cos that’s better for me than white sugar, right? Is it though? Im picking brown sugar for my coffee, because my brain is telling me that its better for me, but actually I have no idea. I think its because I know brown rice is better than white rice. I know that no sugar is best, but is one version really better for me than the other? Because, to be honest, I prefer the white stuff, but if its marginally better for my “internals”, I’ll go for brown.

  1. According to Wikipedia, there's only a slight difference (brown having a few more calories). But Ask Yahoo gives more good bits: a number of vitamins including calcium and iron which are almost completely absent from white sugar!

That seems to argue in favor of brown sugar (next to your brown rice).

  2. whatever floats your boat! Surely whatever you like most is the sugar for you?

  3. Well ,anything unrefined/procesed is better for you than the other. I think white sugar is pretty evil, alright. Actively harms the immune system for one thing.

  4. In theory the brown is better, unrefined, not dyed white... But can you trust anyone who makes food anymore?

I'm sure any kind of sugar is better than evil evil sweeteners...

    Urgh!

  5. But, see, brown sugar is just white sugar that's been tossed with some molasses. That's what I was always told...

  6. I wonder if it depends on the sugar - I'm sure some brown is just dyed white (apparently that's what Brown sliced pan is!). But if it's something like muscovado, or presumably the crystals, isn't that the unrefined product?

I see Roy K as a white bread, white sugar kinda guy...

  7. I'm ever so slightly concerned as to how seriously we're taking something Mossie intended as a trivial piece of fluff (and I always think brown is better for me even though I have never sought out evidence to support it too Mossie!)

Jo you really did just say that brown bread is white bread dyed, didn't you? :) Obviously the anti-brown bread lobby got to you! Maybe there's a whole new post on misconceptions we all still hold as adults!

  8. I prefer white mikado biscuits more than the pink ones.

    It is related.

  9. Blimey. Can open, worms everywhere! Thanks for all the feedback guys. Yep - any kinda sugar is definitely better for me than the evil sweeteners. Hmm. Maybe I will alternate between white and brown in the hopes that they will cancel eachother out.
