Music from the passed

Reading D's post I started thinking about my music. Unfortunatly I broke up with an over 500 album large Vinyl collection and then had little money to invest in other things than rent and food, but looking back I realized I have categorized my passed in chunks of music rather than just one album.

Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles
This is what I grew up with. It is as natural to me as breathing.

The Specials, Madness
Can't really remember how I got into Ska music, but I think it was a girl in the crowd I hung out with at the time who, like me, dressed in sixties clothes instead of the terrible 80's clothes that were in style. The other girls curled their hair, dressed in pink while we wore black and white clothes, had pale faces and black eyeliners. The other kids listened to Saxon, Maiden and Dio.

The Dickies, The Clash, The Jam, Buzzcocks, Theater of Hate, U2
I started hanging with my friends in the city again where I had lived all my life. I started spending more time away from home and we went to so many concerts. At this time it was possible to see loads of bands for hardly no money at all.

Simple Minds, Peter Gabriel, Marillion, Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, Devo, U2
Looking at these videos just cracks me up. I was blessed living without MTV available at home. During this period I drank so much tea it's almost unbelievable. I'd drag my schoolbooks around thinking I'd do my homework at some friends place, instead we ended up listening to music and writing in our Books.

The Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Velvet Underground, U2
Beers if we could afford it, but mostly dinners i.e. sharing a pizza between 8 of us or cooking a pack of spaghetti with just grated cheese. People who were slightly older than I had their own flat. How cool wasn't that? I also spent a year away in Texas. After a week in school I had found the outkasts. We'd rather spend an hour in detention class instead of going to the High School pep-rally as it made us sick.

The Cure, The Smiths, Faith no More, Killing Joke, Metallica, RHCP
Back in Stockholm and out drinking/partying every weekend. Mostly drinking at home before going out as we only held part time or weekend jobs and drinks out are not cheap. The evenings out got longer along with traveling and festivals. At this point I was living with my 500 album boyfriend and we moved apartments about twice a year as we never got a first hand lease.

Oasis, R.E.M., Eeels, Stardust, Moby, Fatboy Slim ...ok so I got a bit carried away there at the end. Lost myself on youtube but I had so much fun! Around REM I started working, got married and had kids. My husband wasn't really in to music and 10 years with him feels like a blank spot musicwise.

But only one song has ever made me drop all I was doing and just listen: Fools Gold

  1. I have seriously enjoyed the past half hour going through this post. Thank you! And Novocaine for the Soul is one of my favourite songs ever. I play it a few times a week even now.

  3. Dolly, me too. You've tapped into a few pieces of my past I've forgotten, esp with the songs I haven't heard in years. Like that last Stone Roses one. I got a present of a tape of their mid 90s & listened to it non-stop, lost it and haven't gone near them in over 10 years. Must dig them out again.
